Katrina Erikson (Grange) and Henry Forrest (Render) meet in their village square, one a dutchman's son, the other a butcher's daughter, both orphaned at birth. They become friends, and then more than that, but when their guardians (Malstov and Morchetti) find out, all hell breaks loose.
A war is upon the land, and Henry is sent to the front lines; a conspiracy is uncovered: his uncle (Morchetti) sent in an application for his nephew. Henry is to become a spy for his country, all because his uncle wants him as far away from Katrina as possible.
Katrina's cousin, Beatrice (Molstov), is jealous of the younger woman's beauty. How far will she go to make sure that her cousin is out of the running to win Henry's heart?
